Event Information
Art Deco - the style that swept across the globe during the 1920s and 1930s and created the defining look of the interwar years. Its influence was ubiquitous: it touched the design of everything - from cinemas and Hollywood films to the packaging of cigarettes, from eveningwear and accessories to luxury liners and locomotives. San Francisco will be the only West Coast venue for this extraordinary exhibition organized by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Art Deco looks at the sources of inspiration and global impact of this popular style of the early 20th century. Standing between Modernism and Historicism, the search for a modern national style in the craft tradition provided a governing concern for designers of the Art Deco generation.
Approximately 300 objects of the highest quality-drawn from collections throughout Europe, America, and Japan-illustrate how different nations used both borrowed forms, including Egyptian, Meso-American, Oriental, and African sources, and indigenous traditions in formulating such a modern style. Surveying the inter-war period, the exhibition offers insights into the economic, social, and cultural context for the production and consumption of Art Deco artifacts.
